STL TOLL
(Idea submitted by Pastor Spencer Duncan of South Hills A/G, Bethel Park, PA.)

We did a STL Toll on a Sunday morning.  I heard another youth pastor do this and so we tried it.  We have 2 services, so it was a double dip.  Anyway, we let the church know a couple of weeks in advance that we would be collecting for STL.

I had a guy make parking "arms" (kind you see in a parking garage) that block cars going out - until they give something toward STL.  It was all done in fun - and we collected $1,000 in 1 day.

My suggestion is to do it on a warm day.

  • Give enough advance warning that it's happening.
  • Give in essence a "get out of jail" free card to any guests that come to your church that morning.
  • Have students collect the money.
  • Have them wear the "STL themed" t-shirts if available.

CAFÉ
(Idea submitted by Pastor Carl Redding of Mount Morris A/G, Mount Morris, PA)

Our biggest and best fundraiser throughout the year is undoubtedly our Cafe that we have (almost monthly).  We have Soul Food Cafe in our fellowship hall after a designated Sunday evening Service. It could also work after a Sunday morning as well if you don't have a PM Service or prior to Wednesday night services.  We have purchased three of those electric skillets and we fry burgers, have cheese available also we have nachos and cheese, pretzels as well as hot dogs.  We actually had a sheetz employee give us an electric hot dog cooker/warmer.  We sell canned soda and just buy it on sale periodically.  We also have free coffee and water available.  We also have a candy table that is a big hit with the kids.  We have worked hard at evaluating what works and what doesn't.  Be flexible and listen to criticism and praise! Have a good team on hand to help you, as it could be overwhelming to do this on your own.  Identify your workers and turn them loose on tasks.  I also have the students serve the people, take their orders and serve their food.  I use a quarter sheet of paper with the menu printed on it that the students write on and when the people pay I take that from them.  This allows me to track what was used and how much cash came in.   It works great.  I try to get around to people during the fellowship to "touch base" with them and see how they are doing (great PR time for the youth ministry & STL).  The church loves to see students "working" (used loosely for some of my students), especially the older generation.  I purchase all of my items from Sam's club (except for Soda) and you can now order everything online and they will even pick it for you and have it ready to go!!
